JOB DESCRIPTIONAdvanced Practice Provider Cardiac Surgery involves providing a broad range of services that begin with an initial patient consultation and assessment throughout the patient's inpatient stay continue with ongoing care through all phases of the cardiac surgery patient. This position combines direct patient care with administrative responsibilities, ensuring high-quality, efficient, and evidence-based care delivery. Providing mentorship, coordinating new orientation scheduling, supporting onboarding/training, and fostering professional development within the team. General responsibilities include examining patients, formulating diagnoses and developing a treatment plan for patients, performing technical, clinical and critical procedures, documenting patient progress, and post-surgical care. In addition, an incumbent in this classification will perform, place and remove chest tubes, intubate and extubate patients, and place and remove central lines and arterial lines. In emergency situations may be required to re-open sternal chest incisions.
- Develop practice guidelines and clinical pathways with the support of the cardiac surgeons to ensure high-level, evidence-based care. Develop and implement Cardiac Surgery Care educational curriculum for all APP staff. Participate in the development and/or maintenance of standardized orientation, service - based competencies, and educational schedule for new hires. Serve on department/hospital - wide committees to help promote patient safety, enhanced patient care, and other balanced scorecard initiatives as delegated by the APP Assistant Manager. In conjunction with the APP Assistant Manager identifies, plans, and coordinates the staffing needs and timekeeping of the team.
- Assesses patient by interview and by obtaining and/or updating medical history. Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
- Performs physical examinations and provides treatment Recognizes and evaluates patients who require the immediate attention of a physician and, when necessary, initiates emergency medical treatment. Utilizes diagnostic techniques, such as observation, palpation, percussion or auscultation.
- Determines abnormal conditions by administering or ordering diagnostic tests and laboratory studies. Follows-up on x-rays and laboratory data. Interprets diagnostic test results.
- Collegiality: Identifies and participates in opportunities to share skills, knowledge, and strategies for patient care and system improvement with colleagues and other healthcare providers. Promotes a learning environment that enables nursing and other healthcare personnel to make optimal contributions and systems to function most effectively. Participates in professional organizations to address issues of concern in meeting patient care needs and improving practice and system effectiveness.
- Maintains accurate and complete patient records. Develops and implements patient management plans, records procedure and progress notes and discharge summaries, and assists in provision of continuity of care.
- Responds to consult requests as per assignment by physician
- Actively contributes to the Health Care Team, actively listens to their coworkers, respects ideas, implements patient care plan and incorporates family/friends and significant others in to care.
- Participates in departmental Quality Assurance projects and research. Perform chart audits to ensure cardiac surgery quality metrics are met.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies
QUALIFICATIONS
BSN and MSN from an accredited school of nursing; successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program required. Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) preferred.
Physician assistant education program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Doctorate of Physician Assistant (DPA) or Doctor of Medical Science (DMS) preferred.
A minimum of 3 years in Cardiac Surgery and Critical Care Services required
Procedural competency including arterial line, central line, chest tube placement
Experience in Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) preferred
